Helping the next generation of mechanical engineers

23 October 2018

The past few years has seen greater emphasis placed on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) which has resulted in more young people graduating in these subjects. To help them stand out graduates hoping to find a job post their degree are increasingly turning to small engineering companies like GX for practical work experience.

Having worked within further education himself, managing director Mark Helmich appreciates that work experience can offer much needed practical experience. As and when possible, he has even been able to offer the next generation of mechanical engineers the opportunity to learn on the job by undertaking work experience within GX, a busy product design engineering company.

“As a former lecturer I cannot stress how important it is for engineers of the future to gain greater understanding and practical skills by working during their long summer breaks,” comments Mark Helmich. “Not only does work experience increase their employability, it provides them with a unique insight into the different roles an engineer may need to fulfil during their working day and week.

We recently had two second year mechanical engineering graduates join us over the summer months; Joe Alpert and Ethan Jones. Both boys made valuable contributions to the projects we assigned them, showing a mature approach to problem solving.”

Little wonder, Joe Alpert confirmed, “I had an amazing time with GX, it was a very steep learning curve but incredibly rewarding.”Joe-Alpert-pix.jpg
