Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary depending on experience

As Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have a proven track record in a product design industry or similar.

Candidate will be required to interface with clients, produce fully detailed 3D design / manufacture drawings and monitor the design process against a deadline.

Mechanical Design Engineer Responsibilities

  • Understand design briefs and create design specification documents
  • Timing estimates and timing plans
  • Identify low risk design solutions using an organised methodology
  • Present options to clients & manage meetings
  • Produce design drawings to allow component manufacture
  • Outline product cost estimates
  • Carry out structural design calculation on component parts and assemblies
  • Liaise with customers/suppliers regarding design issues
  • Work both independently or as a member of a team, within a small office environment.
  • Identify suppliers and source components ensuring design compliance via control documentation
  • Required Knowledge

Required Knowledge

  • Minimum 5, preferably 10 years of experience in a product design role or similar, working as a Mechanical Design Engineer
  • Working knowledge of BS 8888
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001
  • In-depth knowledge of SolidWorks and/or CREO Parametric software package
  • Experience of Rapid Prototype (RP) processes
  • Experience of component design for industrial processes e.g. Injection Moulding, Die Casting, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Extrusion, CNC Machining
  • Experience of assembly methods e.g. Snap Fits, Screw Fasteners, Riveting, Welding, Adhesives
  • Material/Component selection for manufacture

Hardware/embedded firmware engineer

Required skills

Good understanding of electronics, including:

  • Microcontrollers, analogue circuitry (sensors), power supplies, digital communications protocols (e.g. USB, CAN), actuators and motor drive circuitry
  • Programming embedded systems in C/C++, including bare-metal designs and/or stand-alone systems, real-time operating systems (e.g. FreeRTOS).
  • Microcontroller experience using STM32, MSP430 and Pic18/Pic32 highly desirable
  • Hardware prototyping, fault-finding and testing of prototype systems
  • Need to have good communication skills, be proficient with MS Word, Excel, project management software
  • Be comfortable with presenting ideas & designs to clients, also developing specifications to allow client’s requirements to be translated into working designs suitable for production
  • Schematic capture and PCB design (e.g. Orcad/Cadstar, Kicad, or others)
  • Experience of Medical Devices design requirements an advantage
  • Experience with 3D mechanical design (e.g. ProEngineer/SolidWorks) an advantage

We are looking for a candidate who can work with our design team on multiple projects simultaneously, with the following skills:

Knowledge & experience designing electronics circuits, including the following;

Digital circuits, input devices, output drivers (displays, actuators, relays, motor drivers, etc)

Analogue circuits ( sensors, amplifiers & signal conditioning/filtering)

Microcontrollers (ideally both bare-metal custom designs and also Arduino-based) including developing embedded firmware (C/C++, Python, or other high-level languages)
