Instrumentation Design

08 June 2023

A big part of the work we do at GX is developing instrumentation equipment within the Life Science and Medical fields for a range of different clients. Using biotechnology and integrated software, the product design engineering and systems teams have developed several award-winning scientific instruments, diagnostic devices, surgical products, hospital equipment and water and waste treatment management systems.

Instrumentation design refers to the process of designing and developing instruments or systems that are used for measuring, monitoring, controlling, and recording various physical quantities or variables in industrial processes, scientific experiments, or other applications.

In the field of engineering, instrumentation design plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate and reliable measurements of parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, level, pH, conductivity, and more.

Some of the key factors to consider when looking at instrumentation design:

Accuracy and Precision: The accuracy and precision of the instrumentation design are crucial factors to consider. The instruments should provide reliable and accurate measurements.

Sensitivity: The sensitivity of the instrument should be appropriate for the intended application. The instrument should be able to detect small changes in the measured parameter.

Range: The range of the instrument should be suitable for the intended application. It should be able to measure the entire range of the parameter being measured.

Response Time: The response time of the instrument should be fast enough to capture any rapid changes in the parameter being measured.

Robustness and Durability: The instrument should be designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, and should be durable enough to last for a long time.

User Interface: The instrument should have a user-friendly interface that is easy to use and understand. It should also provide clear and concise readings and data.

Calibration and Maintenance: The instrument should be designed for easy calibration and maintenance. Regular calibration and maintenance are necessary to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the instrument.

Cost: The cost of the instrument is also an important factor to consider. The instrument should be affordable and provide value for money.

Safety: The instrument should be designed to ensure the safety of the user and those around them. It should also comply with all relevant safety regulations and standards.

Overall, the principle of form follows function is always key in instrumentation design. Creating accurate, reliable, and efficient measurement and control systems to meet the specific needs of client’s industry is key. At GX we have proved we can do this time and time again.
