Adding PLC and SCADA into vendor hardware to control distribution.

UCB

The Challenge

Install and commission a new distributed process control system for the Viscose plant at UCN Cellophane Ltd, part of UCB films, in Bridgewater, Somerset.

The Solution

GX installed a Mitsubishi Q series programmable logic controller (PLC) system to control and monitor the plant which includes continuous processes, with flow, temperature and pressure loops. The Q series enabled GX to provide a floating master PLC with distributed I/O for process control capabilities and A series with Q2A I/O are used as a cost effective solution.
GX integrated the new system with existing site standard Intellution SCADA, in order to meet the higher levels of in-house control of process monitoring and management reports required by UCB.

A single Ethernet connection links the network to the Intellution SCADA package and makes it possible to access the entire system and interrogate the PLCs from the main SCADA node. High flexibility is achieved within the system through the configuration of the system architecture, which is easily updated and modified to accommodate a wide range of vendor hardware.

The Result

Effective implementation with very comprehensive documentation, entailing process specification, handbooks and PLC code. UCB has since taken an ongoing support contact with GX, operated on a unique token based system constructed to suit UCB’s individual needs. Tokens are purchased when required and can be used for service, training and software modifications. GX provides monthly statements for UCB to track their usage and predict and plan for future needs.
