Richard Bebbington

Mechatronics Engineer

Using his degree in Design and Technology from Loughborough University, Richard has been bringing electronics, software, mechanical and electrical engineering projects to life at GX for the last 25 years.

Richard’s mechanical and electrical engineering experience means he’s well versed in finding compromises between the smooth curves preferred by designers and the more rectangular shapes used by engineers. He understands how cost considerations, testing, time limitations and manufacturing practicalities impact his work. He’s also a master of the Tetris-esque skill of arranging and fitting all required elements on the limited space of a circuit board. Having this understanding of physics & mechanics is important when bringing a new prototype machine to life.

A bit about Richard

Richard’s always enjoyed messing around with things to see how they work, so becoming a mechanical and electrical engineer wasn’t really a conscious choice, it just naturally happened.

As he’s been involved in many different projects over the years, Richard describes himself as a bit of a ‘Jack of all trades’. When he looks at things it is frequently intuitively obvious to him how it works. He’s most drawn to the electronics side of engineering. He’s found that circuit boards are cheaper to fix than mechanical things and it’s quicker to make changes and test your ideas with electronics & software, which helps to keep the creative juices flowing.

Did you know?

Richard has converted two petrol cars in to electric cars so far. Converting cars appeals to his technical engineer side because electric propulsion systems are much more efficient. Unfortunately, he’s limited by the affordability of batteries available, so his cars don’t always have the furthest range!

He also enjoys building robots and tinkering with computers.

When he’s not converting cars or building robots, Richard grows chillies for chili jam to go into bacon sandwiches.
