Richard Bebbington

Mechatronics Engineer

WITH A DEGREE IN DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY FROM LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY, RICHARD HAS BEEN BRINGING ELECTRONICS, SOFTWARE AND MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PROJECTS TO LIFE AT GX FOR OVER 30 YEARS.

Richard’s in-depth experience of mechanical and electrical engineering allows him to find a compromise between the smooth curves preferred by designers and the more rectangular shapes used by engineers. He also understands how cost considerations, testing, time limitations and the practicalities of manufacturing can impact his work.

He is a master of the Tetrisesque skill of arranging and fitting all the required components into the limited space available on a circuit board. His in-depth understanding of physics & mechanics is important when bringing a new prototype machine to life.

A bit about Richard

He has always enjoyed ‘messing around with things to see how they work’ so becoming a mechanical and electrical engineer was not really a conscious choice for Richard, it just happened.

Over the years he has been involved in many different projects and now describes himself as a bit of a Jack of all trades, saying that when he looks something it is often intuitively obvious to him how it works.

He is particularly drawn to the electronics in engineering. He finds circuit boards cheaper to fix than mechanical things, and that its quicker to make changes to and test your ideas with electronics & software, which he finds helps feed his creativity.

Did you know?

Converting a petrol car into an electric one appealed to Richard’s interest in technical engineering ‘because electric propulsion systems are so much more efficient’. He has converted two cars to date, but due to the limited availability of affordable batteries they do not have the desired range! He also enjoys building robots and tinkering with computers. When not converting cars or building robots, Richard grows chillies for chili jam to go into bacon sandwiches.
